Quality tourism that respects the city that hosts it
Barcelona in Context is certified under Biosphere, the sustainable-tourism standard aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, and sustainability is written into how we operate rather than added as a badge. In a city debating the weight of tourism, our model is deliberately the opposite of volume: private groups instead of crowds, licensed local guides instead of scripts, heritage venues operated with conservation as the first constraint, and itineraries that spread value into neighbourhoods and across Catalonia rather than concentrating it on three saturated landmarks. Working sustainably is one of our founding pillars — this page explains what that means concretely, because a certification only matters if you can see it in the product.

What it looks like in practice
Small, private formats
Our tours are private by design: fewer people in fragile interiors, quieter streets, a better visit for everyone — including residents.
Local, licensed employment
Official Guides of Catalonia, local assistants and local suppliers — the value of each visit stays in the territory that produces it.
Heritage-first operations
At the monuments we manage, visitor flows, capacities and formats are designed around conservation, not against it.
Beyond the saturated icons
Itineraries that also lead to Montserrat, the Penedès, Sitges, neighbourhood Barcelona — spreading tourism where it is welcome.
Soft mobility
Walking and cycling formats where the city allows it, and right-sized private transport where it does not.
Honest communication
Transparent pricing, realistic descriptions and no manufactured scarcity. Sustainability includes how you sell.
The Biosphere commitment
Biosphere certification, promoted by the Responsible Tourism Institute, verifies annually that a company’s operations meet criteria aligned with the seventeen UN Sustainable Development Goals — environmental, cultural, social and economic. For us the audit is a useful discipline; the substance is in the daily choices listed above.
We renew the commitment each year, and we would rather under-claim than over-claim: if you want details of our current certification scope, ask and we will show it.
