Discover the extraordinary artistic heritage of Catalonia on a guided visit to the National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC), one of Europe’s most outstanding museums. Housed in the magnificent Palau Nacional on Montjuïc Hill, the museum combines breathtaking architecture, world-class collections and spectacular panoramic views over Barcelona.

Your visit begins with the history of the impressive Palau Nacional, built as the centrepiece of the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition. Its monumental architecture and privileged location make it one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.

Inside, explore the museum’s exceptional collections, spanning more than a thousand years of artistic history. MNAC is internationally renowned for housing the world’s finest collection of Romanesque mural paintings, many rescued from remote churches in the Pyrenees and carefully preserved for future generations. These remarkable frescoes offer a unique insight into medieval spirituality, symbolism and artistic innovation.

Continue through the elegant Gothic galleries, where masterpieces by artists such as Jaume Huguet, Lluís Dalmau and the Master of La Seu d’Urgell illustrate the flourishing of Catalan painting during the Middle Ages.

The journey then moves into the Renaissance and Baroque periods before reaching the museum’s outstanding Modern Art collection, featuring works by celebrated Catalan artists including Ramon Casas, Santiago Rusiñol, Marià Fortuny, Isidre Nonell and Antoni Gaudí. These galleries beautifully illustrate the cultural transformation that accompanied Barcelona’s rise as a modern European capital.

Throughout the tour, your guide will explain the historical context behind the artworks, revealing how religion, politics, commerce and cultural identity have shaped Catalonia’s artistic legacy over the centuries.

The experience concludes with time to admire the spectacular terraces surrounding the museum, offering one of the finest panoramic views of Barcelona, stretching from Plaça d’Espanya and the Magic Fountain to the Mediterranean Sea.

  • The world’s finest collection of Romanesque mural painting

Questions, answered

Is MNAC admission included?

Yes. We arrange your entry in advance so your group visits with a private Official Guide at the agreed time. The guided visit focuses on the collection’s highlights, adapted to your interests.

The museum is enormous — how do you cover it in one visit?

We don’t try to see everything. Your guide builds a curated route through the strongest parts of the collection — usually the Romanesque frescoes, key Gothic works and the Modernisme rooms — so the visit stays coherent and unhurried rather than exhausting.

Which days is the museum open?

The MNAC closes on Mondays (with some exceptions for public holidays), so this tour runs Tuesday to Sunday. We confirm the exact time with you when you book and arrange entry accordingly.

How do we reach the museum on Montjuïc?

The Palau Nacional sits above Plaça d’Espanya, reached by escalators past the Magic Fountain or, for groups, by private transport we can arrange. The terraces beside the museum are one of the finest viewpoints in Barcelona.
