Discover the elegant lakeside town of Puigcerdà, the historic capital of the Cerdanya region. Surrounded by the Pyrenees and close to the French border, Puigcerdà is renowned for its beautiful lake, charming old quarter and lively atmosphere. Stroll through its historic streets while learning about the region’s strategic importance, cross-border traditions and mountain heritage.

Alternatively, explore the enchanting village of Camprodon, famous for its iconic 12th-century Romanesque bridge spanning the River Ter. Wander through its colourful streets, admire traditional stone houses and discover the birthplace of the celebrated composer Isaac Albéniz. The town’s elegant architecture, artisan shops and mountain setting make it one of the most charming villages in the Catalan Pyrenees.

The journey may also take you to the spectacular Vall de Núria, one of Catalonia’s most breathtaking mountain valleys. Accessible only by the historic rack railway (Cremallera de Núria) or on foot, this secluded alpine sanctuary lies at nearly 2,000 metres above sea level. Surrounded by soaring peaks, pristine forests and crystal-clear lakes, the valley is home to the historic Sanctuary of the Virgin of Núria, one of Catalonia’s most important pilgrimage sites. Enjoy time to explore the peaceful surroundings while learning about the valley’s legends, spirituality and natural heritage.

Before reaching the valley, you’ll pass through the charming mountain village of Queralbs, one of the highest inhabited villages in Catalonia. With its narrow stone streets, Romanesque church and traditional mountain architecture, Queralbs perfectly captures the timeless character of Pyrenean life.

Questions, answered

How is this different from the hidden-villages and Empordà trips?

This day follows the northern, mountain axis — the Ripollès valley in the Pyrenean foothills, with its Romanesque monasteries and higher stone villages such as Camprodon and Beget. The hidden-villages trip is a curated inland route, and the Empordà trip focuses on the golden-stone medieval villages near the coast.

How far into the mountains do we go?

The Ripollès is roughly two hours north of Barcelona, in the Pyrenean foothills rather than the high peaks. Roads are good and the villages are close together, so it works comfortably as a private day of about nine hours, with mountain air and cooler temperatures than the coast.

What will we eat?

This is fine charcuterie and mountain-cooking country. Camprodon is known for cured sausages and traditional biscuits, and the valley’s restaurants serve hearty Pyrenean dishes. Your guide can recommend and reserve a lunch to match your taste; food is not included in the guiding fee.

Is it suitable in winter?

Yes, with planning. The villages and monasteries are visited year-round; autumn brings glorious colour and winter a crisp, quiet beauty. In snowy spells your guide adjusts the route to keep driving safe and comfortable, and confirms the plan before the day.
